THE ORGANIZATION
Created in 2014 by San Fernando Valley first-generation college students of color, Somos Familia Valle supports, trains, empowers, and mobilizes the LGBTQ+ community, immigrant families, and supporters for racial, gender, economic, and environmental justice. Somos Familia Valle is an award-winning community-based organization that was honored with the 2017 John Anson Ford Award by the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations and presented by LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl for our groundbreaking, grassroots, and life-changing work uplifting vulnerable youth and families. We organize for intersectional LGBTQ+ justice, student empowerment, and immigrant liberation through transformative dialogue, advocacy, and community organizing. We educate, advocate, agitate, and organize to advance acceptance, safer schools, and healthier communities through our values:
THE OPPORTUNITY
Join our board of directors with the expectation of expanding our capacity, creation of job opportunities, and fulfilling our organizational mission and vision. We are actively seeking additional talented, thoughtful, and courageous board members as we have been granted non-profit status for 2018. As a board member you will have a very important role in SOMOS FAMILIA VALLE: the strategic brain, heart, and soul of the organization. You will be a strategic core ambassador and driving force to meet goals with and for the community. All board members are volunteer-based positions.
THE ROLE
Responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to:
• Monthly executive board meetings (community advisory)
• event representation, outreach, and fundraising (key liaisons/core ambassadors)
• serving on one of our committees (i.e. Budget; Education; Health; Policy Advocacy; Arts, Entertainment and Multimedia Innovation; Intersectional Programming and Event Planning) and helping with projects, tasks, and interventions dedicated to help vulnerable communities.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are looking for people who possess a strong sense of pride in growing up, living in, or studying in the San Fernando Valley; a passion for human relations, volunteerism, and education; respect for community organizing; faith in creating positive cultural changes, and unlimited hope for advancing policy changes and transformative justice. Profiles for a successful candidate would likely have local knowledge and work experience in social work, public relations, communications, business, public administration, fundraising, volunteer coordination, environmental justice, OR education/training experience in social work, school counseling, psychology, public health, child development, ethnic studies, gender studies, queer studies, political science, arts, or kinesiology.
Candidates must have an understanding of gender pronouns, all genders and sexualities, intersectionality, LGBTQ+ issues, including the impact of white supremacy, patriarchy, xenophobia, classism, fatphobia, and environmental racism on our communities. Candidates must be over the age of 18. It is strongly encouraged that applicants are able to communicate in English and Spanish.
THE APPLICATION
Please complete the Board Member Application Form and click "Submit Application". We will accept applications from February 14, 2018 until March 14, 2018, midnight.
